Saint Nicholas Day
"It is more blessed to give than receive." Acts 20:35
More than one thousand years ago in Asia Minor, Saint Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra, was known for his charitable acts. As a new tradition this year, our family is commemorating Saint Nicholas Day, to focus this season on giving to others.
We began the day by reading Saint Nicholas by Ann Tompert. Illustrated in a mosaic pattern, this book melds fact and legend to tell the life story of Nicholas. "Nicholas is the story of a man of God who loved his neighbors and was ever ready to help them in any way he could."
Our way of demonstrating help to others today was to gather forgotten toys and outgrown clothing and donate them to charity.
On-line, St. Nicholas -Discovering the Truth about Santa Claus is a great resource and also has a good kids section. From the site, we got the idea for this Saint Nicholas figure, which the children made.
