Lady Bulldog's Basketball Report
This is the second year for Madison to play basketball in the Upward basketball league made up of our church and three other local churches. It is the 3rd and 4th grade division. Madison is one of five 3rd graders on our team. We only have two 4th graders. My brother-in-law, Mike, is head coach while I am the assistant.
Our girls have practiced extremely hard and learned to be aggressive. Three of the girls never played before, so the first game was a shock to them. We played one of the better teams and lost 16-9, but it was 12-9 going into the last 3 minutes. You could definitely tell it was a first game for us as the second game was much better. Although we lost it 20-16, our girls played much better and ran the plays like we taught them. It was actually 18-16 in the last 2 minutes when one of our 4th graders went to the foul line and missed both shots. We were only 2 of 8 from the free throw line that game! They scored the last 2 points to make it 20 with one second left, so we were in it until the very end.
Madison is doing great on the defensive end and also a good rebounder, although she is only average height. She learned from last year to be very aggressive and is never afraid to dive after the ball or jump into a pile. The first game she didn't take a shot but had an assist and the second game she missed two shots from the field and two foul shots, but she's working on it. She's probably considered the Dennis Rodman of the league, only in her on the court prowess, not off the court!
Coach Alex and Madison
Yesterday, we won our first game 34-8! Obviously, we played an inferior team, but our girls played hard and ran the plays even better than ever. We were up 32-0 at one point and could have won by much more, but ask our girls to "lighten up" on the other team on defense. All of our girls scored. Madison had 2 points and 2 assists plus many rebounds and steals. Every girl played a little point guard.
Next week we play one of the top two teams in the league. It will be a tough challenge, but I think our girls have gotten much better and more confident. We only have one hour a week to practice with them, so we hope they are practicing on their own. We're going to put in a couple of new wrinkles on offense and see if we can get some more open shots.
Stay tuned!
